I'm taking off for France, she said

Mon dieu, it's been a while. Once again, well, whoops. Or should I say, le whoops. (This will be explained later). In any case, beaucoup de choses se sont passes (lots of things happened). In random order, they are
*I went camping (note- this was sort of pseudo camping, but as camping-ish as I'll ever get, really. Come on people, it's me)
*The term (my last term!) ended
*I wrote a paper
*My mother and brother came to Oregon because
*I graduated (sort of, see below) and
*Je vais demenager a Lyon (I'm going to move to Lyon, which you have to say with a funny pronunciation because it's.in.FRANCE.)

All of these are true. I swear! I mean, I know I make things up sometimes, but all of the above seriously are true. This will be proved by yet another surprisingly-low-budget photo essay to follow.

Ok, so camping was beautiful, except it rained the entire weekend (thanks a lot, southern Oregon!). For all of you who don't know, it was my first time camping (or anywhere near camping). I may have forgotten to take pictures, though, so I can't prove that I was there. Sorry people.

The end of the term came so quickly that I almost missed it. Everything after the exams was sort of a blur, since I didn't do nearly as much work as I had before. Ok, so I hardly did anything. I had to write one final paper, which involved as much procrastination as humanly possible. French 203 ended beautifuly- this last class was lovely and hilarious all at the same time. While last quarter's oral presentations included bears and ninjas, this term we had Iron Chef, Joan Rivers, Fashion Week in Africa, cross-dressing and creme brulee. The first day two groups had made food, so I sat to the side, calmly eating creme brulee and Canadian food and grading presentations. I tell you, it was fabulous. Our last day of class (before the exams) ended with one last "La double vie d'Eliana" and finally, the first game of "Est-ce que ca va flotter"- my low-budget French-class rendition of "Will it float?" I couldn't find any way to relate dropping things off the roof to class (nor could I figure out how I could a- get on a roof and b- get permission to drop things off it) so Will it float? took its place. There was only one sustained injury, to a pile of homework, that got a bit wet when I threw the rock in.

The week after the term ended (finals week) my mom and brother showed up. We had lots of fun all over the state- finding giant crabs, incredible food, and more books than we could carry in Portland (including my very own copy of Les Manifestes du surrealisme!), Mike seeing the Oregon Coast for the first time (and getting "eaten" by a "sea monster), going wine-tasting, meeting my friends, and yes, what you've all been waiting for, attending my graduation. It was for Romance Languages (by far the hugest group- SO MANY people graduating), Comperative Literature, Germanic Languages and Russian and Slavic Languages. Nothing like Ripon's but quite a good experience. And you can hide a lot more stuff than you would think in the extra sleeve material of a Master's gown. It was great to finally graduate with the people I started with (Fall 2004 Methodology class!) and to see everyone's family. My family, complete with Jen and Meara who came along for the ride, actually ended up sitting right by Eliana and Emily's families. What are the odds of that? And there's nothing like hearing "Master of Arts, Gina Compitello, French." Even if it isn't completely true yet, because...

I have to stay a student (graduate) for another year. Pourquoi, vous demandez? Parce que mon nouveau boulout exige que je sois etudiante. (why? because dude, when the people in France tell you to stay a student, you stay a student!) Yes, boys and girls, I am moving to France. This has all been in the works for quite some time, but become official not horribly long ago. While I was prepping for exams, one of my committee members emailed me saying that she (and another committee member- did I get the best committee or did I get the best committee?) would like to reccomend me for a position our department has in Lyon, France. The funding came through, I applied, I got the position, and I've been filling out paperwork ever since. The Oregon University System (mainly us and Oregon State) has quite a large study abroad program in Lyon, France based at the Universite Lyon 2. Every year they take a graduate student along to act as an assitant for the staff there (doing whatever they need) and to be a liason between the students and the staff. This position has previously been held by my friends Matt, Ramon and everyone's favorite, Emily. And now MOI. MOI. MOI. Oui, c'est moi qui vais aller a Lyon cette annee! Et comme je suis heureuse! I'll be trekking over to Lyon in the middle of August and stay until at least the end of July as the Graduate Program Assistant. Finalement, j'aurai un appartement et je travaillerai! Am I nervous? Of course! It's all the way across the ocean and being on my own and working! But I'm going to learn so much and I'll.be.living.in.France. It's a GTF appointment like what I have now, so I need to be a student. Which means that they can't "officially" graduate me until next spring (graduation last week-end was a sham! A sham I say!). But it's not really that big a deal- they just had me not turn in the MA essay, and next year, direct from France, I'll take all Reading and Conference courses. I'm done with the requirements. And as Holly put it- "You get an extra year to finish your MA essay and you get it in France." Super! (Super!) Le ha! So France, here I come.

Il y a des autres choses, mais voila les plus importantes. (yeah, there's other stuff, but is it really that important? You can look at le photo essay). Emily, I still can't find the mix. April, I'll email you sometime, really, promise. E- as you may have noticed, I still haven't fixed the link color. Yup, still me.
Ciiiiiiiiiiiao mes amis, et a bientot!

You "went camping" but "forgot" to take pictures, hmm? A likely story. :)

Hey, guess what - I finally watched that tape of Pieces of April that I've had sitting around forever! And...it was good! I don't know if I'll watch it 400 times, but I definitely won't tape over it.

Um... OH MY GAH!! You'll be in Lyon while I'm still in Norway? Maybe I don't have to mail my postcard to you. Maybe I can just give it to you. Please, please, please tell me when you'll get to Lyon and maybe, maybe, maybe I can come visit you. Otherwise, I won't see you for long time. Long, long time. :(

I'm emailing you as well, in case you don't read this. But if you didn't read this, what kind of blogger would you be? I would be apalled! Is that even spelled correctly?
